My Gut Feeling: Kamala Will Win!

I really think Kamala Harris will win the 2024 election, never mind what the polls say! Forget the darn polls! We saw how wildly inaccurate they were in 2016 and 2020.

The Magic Word is Turnout!

It’s all about turnout: come Election Day, how many people will show up to vote? Will they take the trouble to get off the sofa, get dressed, go out, and vote? There are many who just couldn’t be bothered, including left wing people I know.

This country doesn’t make it easy to do one’s civic duty. Voting is not mandatory. Voting day is not a holiday nor are employers required to give workers time off to vote — at least not in every statenot yet! How many working people — who take care of  parents, children, and grandchildren — want to spend a day’s paid leave casting a ballot? It’s a tough call!

Early voting is key. (I already did, by mail ballot). So far, early voter turnout has been good in most states. In general, those who vote early are Democrats while Republicans prefer to wait until Election Day. What matters is getting voters mobilized and in polling booths, especially in the swing states. (1)

According to a Stanford University study, democracies perform better when more people vote. About 240 million people were eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election but only 66.1 percent of them submitted ballots. Roughly 81 million eligible voters did not cast a ballot. That’s a lot of people for the two campaigns to reach before Election Day!

Ballin’ and Stallin’ (2)

I heard an analyst on MSNBC use sports terms to describe Harris and Trump: “she’s ballin’ and he’s stallin’” — he meant Harris was engaging with voters every chance she got while Trump was cancelling major media interviews.

Harris went on a Black talk show, “Charlamagne tha God” to shore up the Black youth vote because, apparently, young Black men prefer not to see women in leadership roles! She defended her “scripted” cautious style as a badge of honor and agreed that Trump was all about fascism.

Harris also went on Fox News to win over the sliver of Republican (mostly women) voters who watch Fox but dislike Trump. Despite the antagonistic interview, Harris can tout the fact that she went into a hostile environment and took hard questions, while Trump is stallin’ — that is, he avoids debates and tough interviews; he ducks, he weaves, he stalls!

Conspiracy Theories!

No big events are likely to shake up the race in these last few days before November 5. Of course, conspiracy theories abound and will no doubt get more extreme!

After the Harris-Trump debate (September 10), right-wing commenters — unable to accept Trump’s disastrous performance vis-à-vis Harris’ forceful one — chose to attack her pearl earrings! Naomi Wolf (former liberal feminist, now a rightwing conspiracy theorist) said the earrings were transmitting audio in real time; that is, back room operatives were feeding Harris answers through the earrings! Other critics speculated they were expensive Tiffany pearls — insinuating that wearing fine jewelry made Harris

ineligible for high office!

The Dems have launched a TV ad calling Trump unhinged, unstable and unchecked; someone who will “ignore all checks that rein in a president’s power.”  They are linking his erratic behavior and bizarre comments with questions about his mental capacity and refusal to release recent medical records. By calling January 6 “a day of love” at a recent Univision town hall, Trump was “gaslighting” the American people, Harris said.

In the final days before the election, a last-ditch effort is underway to peel off Republican support from Trump. Harris rallied with prominent GOP supporters in battleground Pennsylvania, telling them “there is a place for you in this campaign.”

Strong Feeling!

I have faith that the majority in America is about democracy and decency, never mind all the MAGA trash talk of rounding up and deporting immigrants or refusing to accept another person of color in the Oval!

There’s no October Surprise (3) coming our way! Yes, a full-fledged war could break out between Israel and Iran or some other country in the Middie East! But, whatever happens, it’s unlikely to change the outcome of the election. Kamala will win but what happens afterwards? The other side has promised chaos.

Despite Trump’s threats of violence or of unleashing his neo Nazi goons, this sometimes tottering off-kilter Republic will right itself, I strongly feel! Meanwhile, if you live in a battleground state (or basically anywhere) take a leaf from a survivalist guide and start stocking up on canned goods, packaged food, fuel, flashlights, shortwave radio, and bottled water; don’t forget cash! I’m only half kidding!

(1) A swing state (also known as a battleground or purple state) could be won by either side — by a “swing” in votes. In 2024, the swing states are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

(2) Ballin’ or Balling is slang for playing basketball in ghetto neighborhoods. Stallin’ or Stalling comes from wrestling.

(3) An October Surprise is an event that takes place in October that might influence the outcome of a presidential election. One of the best known examples is from 1980 when the Ronald Reagan campaign tried to ensure that President Jimmy Carter would not benefit from the pre-election release of U.S. hostages held by Iran.

Ludi — very well written blog.
Don’t want to be too Euro-centric but there’s a lot riding on this eiection: the future of NATO, EU expansion, and the continued existence of Ukraine.

But what if election machinery breaks down in the swing states and Trump followers disrupt and attack poll workers? It may be weeks before there is a definitive result.

    1. Thanks Alain! Yes, poll workers were attacked in 2020. Since then, safeguards have been put in place. Mob rule could, of course, override safeguards! Like I said, let’s have faith that the rule of law (however tenuous) will hold!

Yes, scary to think what happens not just in Europe but worldwide, if the wrong side wins!

  2. Ludi, Amazing analysis! I can mention two factors that add to the complexity of predicting election results in the USA this year. One, the degree of misogyny among the people (voters) of the USA - this is the kind of thing that stay in the deep subconscious (analogous to the secret and secretive polling booths)! Two, this one is in Harris' favor - deep down, the US voters know they are ECONOMICALLY better off under the Biden Administration, despite inflation, and mostly thanks to higher per capita income, the rate of growth outpacing the rate of price increase. ... Let's hope for the best!!!

    1. Mati — Thank you for the astute comment! Sadly, gender seems to be more important than race when it comes to Black men vs. Kamala, despite the scolding from Obama! But it’s also a more widespread misogyny, as you say.

As far as being better off under Biden, of course they are! But that fact matters less to MAGA voters high on grievance and hatred of immigrants. They would rather vote against their own self interest (and pocket book) than admit to being better off: sheer lunacy…

    2. Ludi, Thanks for your observations. ... As for misogyny, it's not only the Black males, but the Latino males also have similar issues. ... I also think, Harris (Kamala) makes American voters uneasy because she goes beyond the binary of Black and White. ... Re MAGA voters, you probably read the analysis that the "rate of growth of income" is an issue. Apparently, people are aware about not only how others are doing, but also about how well the others are doing (the per capita Black income is growing faster than the per capita White income, although the average per capita income of the Black population is still much lower than that of the White population). This causes disgruntlement among the White population because they feel, this cuts into their "white privilege"!

Good analysis Ludi! The U.S. has strong institutions and will probably muddle through a Trump win, if it happens. The problem will be the fallout in the rest of the world!

Russia will keep what it already has in Ukraine and might even take over Ukraine because Trump won’t send any more arms.

Israel, and Bibi, will feel emboldened to attack Iran and its nuclear facilities leading to an expanded ongoing conflagration!

China will probably move to take over Taiwan by cutting a deal with Trump on something he wants more!

NATO will break up, forcing Europe to shift slowly towards Russia!

Who knows what will happen between India, Pakistan and China but territory will probably change hands and force India to be subservient towards China. This could also be true of Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Net-net the US will be isolated everywhere! It could go from leader of the free world, to the untrustworthy pariah of the world!

    Hi Ludi
It was very good to read a positive view on the election outcome. A majority of Australians, in fact 67%, would vote for Kamala Harris!
Let's hope your prediction is right!
    Cheers

    1. Dear KK — Thanks for posting a comment! People are falling over themselves to work for the campaign — as volunteers! It’s years since I’ve seen so much enthusiasm for a candidate
      — not even the Clintons (both Bill and Hillary) were as popular!

  10. Very well written, Ludi.Enjoyed the article thoroughly.
I really hope that your predictions are spot on. Dread to think of the consequences of that not happening. Hope the people use their common sense and vote for Harris.

    2. Thank you, Padmini! That is the key question: will good sense to vote their own self interest prevail or will they be motivated by hatred, ignorance, and grievance (none of which is real or genuine)! Fingers crossed!

  12. I vividly remember that 2016 Election night awaiting the victory of Hilary. It never happened and our country was cast into four years of darkness.
Of course the result of the elections in a democracy is entirely in the hands of the electorate. An electorate that values truthfulness, honesty and politeness would make a difference over one choosing a felon, a bully, a liar and a cheat.
I hope the finer aspects of conscience will guide the electorate in this critical time of our history.

    1. Thank you Frank for that very thoughtful comment! Not sure how educated or informed this electorate is, particularly those who support the felon! That fact itself would argue otherwise but we shall see…
